Google Gemini Can Now Create and Edit PDFs, Documents and Presentations Directly in Chat

Google has introduced a major update to its Gemini app, allowing users to create, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and other files directly within a conversation. The new feature is designed to make Gemini more useful for everyday productivity by reducing the need to switch between multiple applications when creating or modifying files.

With this update, users can generate a file using a text prompt, open it in a full-screen editor, make changes manually or ask Gemini to refine specific sections. The AI assistant can also respond to questions about highlighted text and modify both written content and visual elements in supported files.

The update is particularly useful for students, professionals, researchers and content creators who regularly work with documents and study materials. Google says these capabilities are now available to all Gemini users in every language supported by the app.

Gemini Can Create and Edit Files Without Leaving Chat

Previously, Gemini allowed users to generate different types of files directly from prompts and download them for further editing. However, making changes often meant opening another application.

The latest update brings more of that editing experience directly into Gemini.

Users can now ask the chatbot to create a document, presentation, spreadsheet or PDF and preview the result within the conversation. If something needs to be changed, they can expand the file into a full-screen view and type their edits directly.

Alternatively, users can select or highlight a particular section and ask Gemini to explain it, rewrite it or make specific improvements.

For example, someone preparing a business report can generate an initial document, highlight a paragraph that needs clarification and ask Gemini to make it more concise. The assistant can then refine the selected content without requiring the user to start a separate conversation or manually recreate the document.

This approach makes the chatbot more than a tool for generating text. It moves Gemini closer to becoming an integrated workspace for creating and refining digital files.

Edit PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets and Presentations

The new functionality supports several file formats, covering common productivity and creative workflows.

Users can work with:

  • PDF documents
  • Google Docs
  • Google Sheets
  • Slide presentations
  • Markdown files
  • Plain text (TXT) files
  • Programming code

Gemini can generate these files, display a preview and help users make changes through direct editing or natural-language instructions.

For presentations, users can create an initial outline, preview the slides and ask Gemini to improve the structure, tone or content. This could be useful when preparing business presentations, educational material or project proposals.

Spreadsheet users can also generate structured tables and trackers, then refine the information without repeatedly moving between different tools.

The ability to work with code files adds another dimension to the update, particularly for developers who want to review or refine generated code within the same workflow.

Once the content is ready, users can continue working with supported Google Workspace applications or download the generated files in compatible formats.

PDF Editing Is Available on Mobile and Web

One important detail is that availability differs depending on the file format and platform.

PDF previewing and editing are supported on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. This means Android and iPhone users can access the new PDF workflow without needing a desktop computer.

However, editing other supported formats, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT and code, is currently limited to the web version of Gemini.

This distinction is worth remembering for users who primarily access Gemini through their smartphones.

Google says the new capabilities are rolling out to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available. The company has not restricted the announcement to a particular paid subscription tier.

How to Edit Documents Using Gemini

The new workflow is designed to be straightforward and does not require advanced editing knowledge.

Users can start by opening Gemini and asking it to generate a file based on their requirements.

For example, a user could request a detailed project report, a presentation about a business idea or a PDF containing study notes.

Once Gemini creates the file, users can preview it directly within the conversation. They can then expand the document into full-screen mode to make manual changes.

Another option is to highlight specific content and ask Gemini to modify it. This can include rewriting paragraphs, correcting information, improving explanations or refining visual elements in supported files.

Users can also ask follow-up questions about selected sections, making it easier to understand complicated information without leaving the document.

The entire process remains connected to the original Gemini conversation, allowing users to continue refining their work through additional prompts.

Google Demonstrates PDF Study Guide Creation

Google has highlighted an educational use case to demonstrate how the new editing capabilities work.

In its example, a user uploads handwritten lecture notes and asks Gemini to convert them into a structured PDF study guide.

The AI assistant processes the uploaded material and creates a digital document that can be reviewed and edited directly within the chat.

After the PDF is generated, the user can manually correct sections, highlight specific passages and ask Gemini to improve selected content. Additional questions can also be asked about the material.

This workflow could be useful for students preparing for examinations, teachers creating learning resources and researchers organising handwritten notes.

Instead of manually typing everything into a document editor, users can use Gemini to convert existing material into a more organised format and then refine it through conversational instructions.

Gemini Notebook Adds Free Digital Textbooks

Alongside the document editing update, Google is expanding the educational capabilities of Gemini Notebook.

The company is adding hundreds of free digital textbooks to its learning-focused experience, giving students access to additional study resources.

This expansion strengthens Google’s broader effort to position Gemini as a useful educational assistant rather than simply a general-purpose chatbot.

Combined with PDF creation and editing, the new tools could help students organise study material, generate revision guides and interact with learning content more efficiently.

However, users should still verify important academic information and references rather than relying entirely on AI-generated material.

Gemini Moves Closer to an All-in-One Productivity Tool

The latest update represents another step in Google’s effort to make Gemini more useful for work, education and everyday productivity.

By bringing file creation, previewing and editing into one conversation, Google is reducing the friction involved in moving between AI assistance and traditional productivity applications.

The ability to highlight content and request targeted changes is particularly useful because it gives users more control over the final result. Instead of repeatedly generating an entire document, they can focus on improving individual sections.

The mobile support for PDFs also makes the feature more accessible to users who work primarily from smartphones.

Overall, Google’s new Gemini update makes document creation and editing more conversational. With support for PDFs, documents, spreadsheets, presentations and code, the chatbot is evolving into a more capable productivity platform that can help users move from an initial idea to a refined file within a single workspace.
