The tablet is available in Midnight and Starlight colour options. Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the Smart Folio are available separately.
Pre-orders began on October 28, with retail availability scheduled for November 6, 2026.
8.5-Inch OLED Display With 1,200 Nits Brightness
The biggest upgrade is the move to OLED technology. The new iPad mini features an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with a resolution of 2316 x 1512 pixels and a pixel density of 326ppi.

Unlike conventional LCD panels, OLED technology allows individual pixels to control their own light output. This enables deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more precise control over dark scenes, which can improve the viewing experience when watching movies, editing photos or reading content.
Apple claims peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits for HDR content, while typical full-screen brightness reaches 600 nits. The display also supports the P3 wide colour gamut, True Tone and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.
The screen features thinner bezels, helping accommodate the larger display without significantly increasing the tablet’s overall footprint. An optional nano-texture glass finish is also available for users who want to reduce glare in bright environments.
However, the display retains a 60Hz refresh rate rather than offering ProMotion at up to 120Hz. This means users upgrading from a higher-refresh-rate iPad Pro should not expect the same level of scrolling smoothness.
A20 Pro Chip Powers the New iPad mini
Apple has equipped the tablet with its A20 Pro processor, built using an advanced 2nm manufacturing process. The chip is designed to improve performance while supporting demanding applications, graphics-intensive games and on-device AI features.
The CPU configuration depends on the storage variant. The 128GB and 256GB models use a five-core CPU, while the 512GB version features a six-core CPU.
The graphics system includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing, dynamic caching and mesh shading. These capabilities can benefit supported games and applications that use advanced rendering techniques.
Apple also highlights improvements to machine learning performance through its Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators integrated into the GPU. These components help process supported AI tasks directly on the device.
For users who regularly edit photos, multitask between applications or use creative tools, the upgraded processor should provide additional headroom compared with the previous generation. Actual performance gains will depend on the application and configuration.
Acoustic Display Brings Speakers Under the Screen
Another notable change is Apple’s new Acoustic Display audio system. Instead of using conventional speaker openings in the usual locations, the tablet places its main speaker components beneath the display, using the screen and an internal cavity to produce sound.
Custom tweeters are integrated between the glass and aluminium enclosure to reproduce higher frequencies. The system is designed to deliver clearer audio while preserving the tablet’s sealed construction.
This arrangement helps Apple combine a slimmer design with IP67-rated dust and water resistance.
The new model also includes a 12MP rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture and 4K video recording at up to 60fps. On the front, a 12MP Center Stage camera sits along the landscape edge, making video calls more natural when the tablet is used horizontally.
The camera can automatically keep users in frame during supported video calls, which is useful for online meetings, classes and remote collaboration.
Slimmer Design With IP67 Protection
The new iPad mini measures 195.3 x 132.6 x 5.4mm and weighs approximately 255 grams for the Wi-Fi model. The cellular variant weighs around 263 grams.

At 5.4mm thick, it is slimmer than its predecessor, making it easier to carry in a small bag or hold for extended reading sessions.
Apple has also introduced IP67-rated dust and water resistance. This provides protection against dust and limited water immersion under specified laboratory conditions, although it does not make the tablet waterproof in every situation.
The device retains Touch ID for secure authentication and uses USB-C for charging and data transfer. The USB-C port supports USB 3 speeds of up to 10Gbps, making file transfers faster when paired with compatible equipment.
Wi-Fi 7, 5G and Apple Intelligence
The updated iPad mini includes Apple’s N1 wireless chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity. Cellular models also use Apple’s C2 modem and support 5G connectivity through eSIM.
These upgrades are intended to improve wireless performance and power efficiency, although actual speeds depend on the network, router and region.
The tablet runs iPadOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence features available for the device, language and region. These tools include writing assistance and other supported AI-powered functions, with Siri receiving additional software improvements.
The new model also supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Users can take handwritten notes, annotate documents, sketch illustrations and interact with compatible creative applications.
Apple’s optional Smart Folio provides a protective cover and stand, making the compact tablet suitable for reading, travel and everyday productivity.

Battery Life and Charging
The iPad mini uses a rechargeable battery rated at approximately 19Wh. Apple says the tablet can provide up to 10 hours of web browsing over Wi-Fi or video playback under its stated testing conditions.
The USB-C port supports charging, and Apple says the battery can reach around 50% in approximately 30 minutes when using a compatible power adapter rated at 35W or higher.
Battery life will vary according to display brightness, wireless connectivity, applications and other usage patterns. A higher-powered charger may need to be purchased separately, depending on the accessories included in the box.
Should You Buy the New iPad mini?
The 2026 iPad mini is a substantial upgrade for users who prefer compact tablets. Its OLED display, A20 Pro chip, slimmer design and improved connectivity make it more capable for entertainment, reading, note-taking and creative work.
The Acoustic Display speaker system is another interesting addition, combining a different audio design with the tablet’s dust and water resistance.
However, the 60Hz refresh rate remains a limitation for buyers who expect a smoother display, and the starting price of ₹82,900 places the tablet firmly in the premium category.
For users who want a small, powerful tablet that can be carried almost anywhere, the new iPad mini is an appealing option. Those who primarily need a larger workspace for multitasking may find a bigger iPad more suitable.
