Amazon Alexa+ Arrives in India With Generative AI: What’s New?

Amazon Alexa is getting a major upgrade in India. Amazon has launched Alexa+, a generative AI-powered version of its voice assistant designed to handle more natural conversations, remember user preferences and complete tasks rather than simply respond to individual commands.

Alexa+ entered Early Access in India on September 16, 2026. During Early Access, it is available free to eligible customers. Amazon says the upgraded assistant has been specifically adapted for Indian users, including support for English, Hindi and Hinglish.

The change matters because Alexa is moving beyond the traditional smart-speaker model. Instead of asking Alexa to set a timer or play a song one command at a time, users can have longer conversations, ask follow-up questions and give more complicated instructions.

What is Amazon Alexa+?

Alexa+ is Amazon’s next-generation version of Alexa, powered by generative AI. Amazon describes it as a more conversational and personalised assistant that can help with smart home control, shopping, entertainment, scheduling, meal planning and other everyday tasks.

The biggest difference is context.

With traditional Alexa, a request generally needed to be understood as a specific command. Alexa+ is designed to understand the broader intent behind a conversation and retain context between follow-up requests.

For example, instead of repeatedly saying “Alexa” for every instruction, users can continue speaking naturally after starting a conversation. Amazon says Alexa+ can also switch between English and Hindi, including within the same sentence.

Alexa+ Is Built for Indian Language and Culture

One of the most significant parts of the India launch is localisation.

Alexa+ supports English, Hindi and Hinglish, with Amazon saying that additional Indian languages are planned. The assistant has also been developed to understand the way Indians actually speak, including colloquial expressions and code-mixed conversations.

This is particularly relevant for voice assistants because Indian households can be noisy and multilingual. Amazon says its speech-recognition technology has been tuned for Indian homes, including situations involving background conversations, television and household sounds.

Amazon also says technology teams in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai have contributed to Alexa+’s India-specific capabilities.

What Can Amazon Alexa+ Do?

Alexa+ retains many familiar Alexa functions but expands them with generative AI.

1. Have longer conversations

Users can ask follow-up questions without restarting every interaction. Alexa+ is designed to remember the context of a conversation, making voice interactions feel closer to a natural dialogue.

2. Remember personal preferences

Alexa+ can remember information users choose to share, such as food preferences, favourite restaurants or other household preferences. Amazon says this memory is used to personalise future responses.

3. Control smart home devices

Alexa+ can continue controlling compatible smart lights, plugs, switches, air conditioners and other connected devices.

Amazon says Indian users made more than 9 billion Alexa interactions during the previous 12 months, highlighting the existing scale of Alexa usage in the country.

4. Help with shopping and planning

The upgraded assistant can help users create shopping lists, discover products, plan meals and manage everyday activities. Amazon is also expanding Alexa+’s ability to take actions through connected services.

5. Work with Indian services

Alexa+ is being integrated with services including Swiggy, Zomato’s District, EazyDiner, MakeMyTrip, TripAdvisor and other platforms for tasks such as food, dining and travel. Some capabilities are described as coming soon rather than being available immediately.

This is where Alexa+ starts looking less like a conventional voice assistant and more like an AI agent that can connect a conversation with an action.

Alexa+ Pricing in India

Alexa+ is currently available free during Early Access for eligible customers.

After Early Access, Amazon says Alexa+ will be included at no additional cost for Prime members. Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers can access it through a standalone subscription priced at ₹2,000 per month or through a qualifying Prime plan.

Availability and features can vary by device, and Amazon notes that some older Echo generations are not compatible with Alexa+.

Which Devices Support Alexa+?

Alexa+ is being made available across supported Echo smart speakers and smart displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa mobile app. Amazon has also introduced newer Echo hardware designed specifically for the upgraded assistant.

Amazon’s new Alexa+ hardware lineup includes the Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio, with additional processing, memory and sensors intended to support the new experience.

Why Alexa+ Is Different From a Typical AI Chatbot

The distinction is important.

A chatbot is primarily designed to generate information or responses. Alexa+ combines generative AI with Amazon’s existing voice assistant, smart-home ecosystem and connected services.

That means the objective isn’t simply to answer a question. Alexa+ is also designed to do something with the answer, such as control a device, help organise a schedule, build a shopping list or eventually make bookings.

Amazon’s India launch therefore represents a broader shift in what the company expects Alexa to become: an AI assistant that operates across the home and connected services rather than simply a voice interface for Echo speakers.

The Bottom Line

Amazon Alexa+ marks a substantial change from the original Alexa experience. Generative AI brings longer conversations, contextual understanding, memory and more personalised responses, while India’s English, Hindi and Hinglish support addresses the country’s multilingual households.

The most interesting development, however, is Alexa+’s ability to connect conversations with actions. As integrations with shopping, food delivery, travel and other services expand, Alexa could become less about issuing individual voice commands and more about delegating everyday tasks.

For Indian users, the Early Access rollout provides the first opportunity to see how well that vision works in real homes.
