WhatsApp is testing a redesigned bottom navigation bar for Android that gives the messaging app a more modern and visually separated interface. The upcoming design introduces a floating navigation bar with rounded corners, bringing the Android version closer in appearance to WhatsApp’s recent iOS interface.
The new design was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.38.10, although it is currently still under development and has not yet been made available to beta testers. WhatsApp could make additional changes to the interface before a wider rollout.
WhatsApp Android Gets a Floating Navigation Bar
The biggest change is the appearance of the bottom navigation bar.
Instead of looking like an integrated part of the bottom edge of the app, the redesigned bar appears as a separate floating element with rounded corners. This creates more visual separation between the navigation controls and the rest of the WhatsApp interface.
The design is being developed for both light and dark themes, although the difference is reportedly easier to notice when using the light theme.
WhatsApp appears to be taking some inspiration from its iOS interface, which recently adopted a floating tab-bar design. However, the Android version is not expected to simply copy Apple’s Liquid Glass appearance. WhatsApp is maintaining a design approach suited to Android.
Bottom Navigation Already Exists on Android
This is not the first time WhatsApp has experimented with its Android navigation system.
WhatsApp originally introduced the bottom navigation bar on Android during its beta development in 2023, moving major sections such as Chats, Communities, Updates and Calls closer to the bottom of the screen.
Meta said the change was intended to make navigation easier by placing the main tabs closer to users’ thumbs and creating a more natural Android experience.
The latest development therefore focuses on refreshing the visual design rather than moving the navigation system to a completely new location.
WhatsApp Could Change the Design Before Release
The redesigned navigation bar is still being actively developed, meaning the version currently spotted in testing should not necessarily be considered the final design.
WhatsApp could adjust the shape, spacing, appearance or other elements before making the feature available to beta testers.
There is also currently no confirmed release date for when the redesigned navigation bar will reach all Android users.
For now, Android users should not expect the new floating navigation bar simply by updating WhatsApp from the Google Play Store.

WhatsApp Continues to Refresh Its Android Interface
The navigation redesign is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to modernize its Android interface.
The company has continued experimenting with new personalization and interface features, while also working toward a more consistent visual experience across Android and iOS.
The new floating navigation bar could make the Android application feel cleaner while providing a closer visual relationship with the company’s iOS design.
However, since the feature remains under development, it is too early to say exactly when it will become available to everyone.
For now, WhatsApp users will need to wait for a future beta release or official rollout before they can try the redesigned navigation experience.
