OpenAI is giving ChatGPT one of its biggest interface changes yet with the introduction of Intelligent UI, a new capability that allows the chatbot to create visual and interactive responses instead of relying primarily on text.
The feature arrives alongside the broader rollout of GPT-6, OpenAI’s latest generation of models designed for everyday ChatGPT conversations. Rather than simply generating a paragraph in response to a question, ChatGPT can now decide whether a task would be better served by a chart, diagram, form, button, calculator or another interactive experience.
The result is a ChatGPT experience that feels less like a conventional chatbot and more like an application that can build the right interface for a particular task.
What Is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?
Intelligent UI is essentially OpenAI’s attempt to make ChatGPT responses adapt to the way information needs to be consumed.
For a straightforward question, ChatGPT can still provide a normal text response. But when a visual or interactive format makes more sense, GPT-6 can generate one directly inside the conversation.
Responses can include graphics, charts, diagrams, tappable buttons, forms and interactive tools. Users can interact with those elements without leaving the chat. OpenAI says the system has been trained to select an appropriate presentation based on the question and the information being provided.
That means a comparison could appear as a side-by-side visual, while a complicated concept might be explained through an interactive diagram.
The company believes this approach can make everyday questions easier to understand while also making more complicated subjects easier to explore.
ChatGPT Can Build Tools on Demand
One of the most interesting parts of Intelligent UI is the ability to create small tools specifically for the task at hand.
Instead of asking ChatGPT to calculate a result and then manually entering the numbers somewhere else, users can ask it to create a calculator inside the conversation. OpenAI has also highlighted examples such as bill splitters and simple games.
This changes the role of ChatGPT. The chatbot isn’t just producing information anymore; it can create a lightweight interface that helps users work with that information.
For example, someone planning a dinner could receive an interactive recipe that adjusts ingredient quantities based on the number of guests. A financial question could produce a calculator with editable inputs, while a learning question could be accompanied by an interactive visual that lets the user change parameters and see what happens.
Interactive Charts, Diagrams and Visual Explanations
OpenAI is also using Intelligent UI to make explanations more visual.
A complicated technical topic that would normally require several paragraphs could instead be represented through an interactive diagram. Charts can be used when comparing data, while forms and controls can help users modify an answer rather than starting another prompt.
The company says Intelligent UI can dynamically combine different components within the same response. This means users aren’t locked into a single interface style for every question.
The approach could be particularly useful for education, planning, calculations and comparisons, where interacting with information can be more effective than simply reading an answer.
GPT-6 Can Start Answering Before It Finishes Thinking
The Intelligent UI update also comes with a change to how ChatGPT presents responses.
GPT-6 can begin answering while it continues to think or use tools, allowing users to start reading before the complete response has been generated. Additional findings can then appear as the response progresses.
OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant can begin answers to questions requiring web searches 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. The figure refers to the time before the response begins appearing, rather than the total time required to finish an answer.
This could make longer research-style interactions feel more responsive, particularly when ChatGPT needs to search the web or perform multiple steps before reaching a conclusion.
How Intelligent UI Works
Behind the scenes, Intelligent UI isn’t simply placing prebuilt widgets into every response.
OpenAI says GPT-6 can compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements based on the user’s request. The interface is generated through a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it.
That architecture allows the interface to appear progressively rather than waiting for the entire answer to be completed.
It also gives ChatGPT more flexibility. The system can choose a simple text response when that’s the best option, instead of adding unnecessary visual elements to every conversation.
GPT-6 Rollout Across ChatGPT Plans
OpenAI began the global rollout of GPT-6 and Intelligent UI on October 7, 2026, initially for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users.
The update is expanding to Free and Go users from October 8. Enterprise availability can depend on workspace administrator settings.
The model configuration also differs between subscription tiers. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users receive GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users receive GPT-6 Luna.
Intelligent UI is available across the supported GPT-6 reasoning levels, while the Pro reasoning option that uses GPT-6 Astra does not support Intelligent UI. OpenAI also says the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.
ChatGPT Is Moving Beyond the Textbox
The arrival of Intelligent UI represents a significant change in how OpenAI thinks about ChatGPT.
For years, the basic chatbot model was straightforward: users typed a question, and the AI returned text, sometimes supplemented by images, files or links. Intelligent UI introduces another layer where the AI can determine how the answer should be presented and interacted with.
That could eventually make many traditional lightweight apps feel less necessary.
If someone needs a calculator, a comparison table, a simple planner or an interactive explanation, they may no longer need to open a separate application. ChatGPT can potentially create the interface inside the conversation and tailor it to the exact request.
The shift also makes the distinction between an AI assistant and a software application less clear.
What This Means for the Future of ChatGPT
OpenAI’s new approach could have a bigger impact than a conventional model upgrade because it changes what users can expect from an AI response.
Instead of asking users to adapt their questions to a fixed chatbot interface, Intelligent UI allows the interface itself to adapt to the task.
That could be especially valuable as ChatGPT takes on more complex workflows. A user might start with a question, receive an explanation, adjust an interactive control, use a generated tool and continue refining the result without leaving the same conversation.
There are still practical questions around how far these generated interfaces can go, how consistent they will be and what limitations developers and users will encounter. But the direction is clear: OpenAI wants ChatGPT to become more than a place where people read AI-generated text.
With GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, the company is moving toward a ChatGPT experience where the answer can become the interface.
For users, that could mean fewer separate tools, more visual explanations and a much more interactive way to work with AI.
