Claude Comes to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides With Powerful AI Editing Tools

Anthropic is bringing Claude directly into Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides, giving users another AI assistant option inside Google’s popular productivity apps.

The new Claude for Google Workspace integration is now available in public beta for paid Claude users. Instead of switching between an AI chatbot and a Google Workspace file, users can open Claude in a sidebar and ask it to draft, edit, analyze or restructure content directly inside the file.

The move puts Claude in more direct competition with Gemini, Google’s own AI assistant that is already integrated into Workspace applications. For people who already rely on Claude for writing, analysis or creative work, the new integration could make it much easier to use the AI assistant without constantly copying and pasting information between apps.

Claude Gets Its Own Google Workspace Sidebar

The biggest change is the addition of a Claude sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

Once the integration is installed, users can open Claude alongside their existing file and give it instructions in natural language. Claude can then understand the context of the document or presentation and make changes directly.

This approach is different from simply uploading a document to an AI chatbot. Claude can work within the actual Google Workspace file, allowing users to review the changes and continue editing without leaving the application.

Anthropic says the integration is designed to help users move from an initial idea to a finished document, spreadsheet or presentation with fewer manual steps.

Claude in Google Docs Can Rewrite and Restructure Documents

Google Docs is one of the areas where the Claude integration could be particularly useful.

Users can ask Claude to draft documents, rewrite passages, correct spelling, restructure sections and change the tone of existing content.

For example, someone could provide a rough outline and ask Claude to turn it into a complete first draft. A long document can also be reorganized to improve its flow, while individual sections can be rewritten for a different audience.

Claude can also summarize lengthy material and help make dense documents easier to understand.

Another useful capability is document review. Anthropic’s Workspace listing says Claude can redline contracts and agreements, showing proposed changes that users can review and accept or reject.

This could make the integration especially useful for professionals who spend a significant amount of time working with reports, proposals, contracts and other long-form documents.

Claude Can Build and Analyze Google Sheets

The integration goes beyond writing.

In Google Sheets, Claude can help users create models, write formulas, debug existing formulas, clean datasets and analyze information.

Users can describe what they want to calculate in plain language rather than manually constructing every formula.

For example, someone could ask Claude to create a financial model based on a set of requirements or explain why a particular spreadsheet formula is returning an error.

Claude can also clean up messy data, including duplicate entries, inconsistent formatting and unwanted spaces.

After analyzing a dataset, the AI can organize the results directly in the spreadsheet, potentially reducing the amount of repetitive spreadsheet work required from users.

For analysts and business teams, this could be one of the more useful parts of the new integration.

Claude Can Create and Restyle Google Slides

Presentations are another major part of the new Claude integration.

Claude can draft individual slides or entire presentations based on an outline, notes or existing content. It can also tighten slides that contain too much information and restyle content to create a more consistent presentation.

Users can ask Claude to add a new slide to an existing deck while maintaining the presentation’s overall structure and theme.

This could be particularly useful when a presentation already has a defined visual system but needs additional content quickly.

Rather than creating slides from scratch, users can describe what they need and allow Claude to work within the existing Google Slides file.

Claude Can Work With Existing File Context

One of the most important aspects of the integration is that Claude can work with the file that is already open.

In Google Docs, for example, users can ask questions about the current document. In Sheets, Claude can work with the spreadsheet’s data and formulas, while in Slides it can understand the existing deck when making changes.

Anthropic’s support documentation says users can ask questions about an open file and receive answers that cite where the information came from.

That context-aware approach could make Claude more useful than a standalone chatbot for people who spend most of their working day inside Google Workspace.

Claude Adds an “Ask Before Edits” Option

Anthropic has also included an “ask before edits” mode.

The feature allows users to preview proposed changes before Claude applies them to the file. This gives users greater control over AI-generated edits instead of allowing every requested change to happen immediately.

This is particularly important when working on important documents, spreadsheets or presentations where an unwanted change could affect existing content.

Users can review the proposed modifications and decide whether they want Claude to proceed.

Claude for Google Workspace Is a Paid Feature

The new integration is not currently aimed at free Claude users.

Anthropic’s support documentation says Claude for Google Workspace is available in beta for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Users also need a Google account that is permitted to install applications from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

The Claude app is distributed through the Google Workspace Marketplace, where it is listed as an Anthropic application.

Once installed, users can access Claude from Google Docs, Sheets or Slides through the Workspace interface.

How to Use Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Getting started is relatively straightforward.

Users first need to install the Claude app from the Google Workspace Marketplace. After installation, they can open a Google Docs, Sheets or Slides file and access Claude through the Extensions menu.

The general setup process is:

  1. Install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
  2. Open a Google Docs, Sheets or Slides file.
  3. Go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
  4. Sign in using a compatible Claude account.
  5. Grant the requested permissions.
  6. Start giving Claude instructions about the open file.

Anthropic says the initial setup can take only a few minutes when Marketplace apps are already permitted by the user’s organization.

Claude vs Gemini in Google Workspace

The arrival of Claude inside Google Workspace is particularly interesting because Gemini already has a native role within Google’s productivity ecosystem.

For Google users, Gemini remains the most deeply integrated option because it is Google’s own AI platform. However, the new Claude integration gives users who prefer Anthropic’s AI models another choice without forcing them to leave Google Workspace.

This could be especially appealing to companies and professionals that already use Claude for specific writing, coding, research or analytical workflows.

Instead of choosing between Google Workspace and Claude, users can now combine the two.

Claude’s Google Workspace Expansion Comes at an Interesting Time

The launch comes shortly after Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5, its newer model designed for everyday tasks, coding and creating polished documents, slides and spreadsheets. Anthropic describes Sonnet 5.5 as a faster and lower-cost complement to its more capable Opus 5.5 model.

That makes the timing of the Google Workspace integration particularly significant.

As AI assistants become increasingly capable of completing real work rather than simply answering questions, integrations with productivity software are becoming an important part of the competition between AI companies.

Claude’s arrival in Docs, Sheets and Slides gives Anthropic another way to put its AI directly into users’ everyday workflows.

What This Means for Google Workspace Users

For users, the biggest advantage is convenience.

Instead of copying text into Claude, generating a response and then pasting the result back into Google Docs, users can work with Claude directly inside the document.

The same applies to spreadsheets and presentations.

This could save time on repetitive tasks such as rewriting paragraphs, creating formulas, cleaning datasets, summarizing information, preparing presentation slides and restructuring existing content.

At the same time, users still have the ability to review changes before accepting them, which is important for maintaining control over AI-generated work.

Final Verdict

The arrival of Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides marks an important expansion of Anthropic’s productivity strategy.

The integration brings Claude directly into three of Google’s most widely used work applications, allowing users to draft, rewrite, analyze and restructure content without constantly switching between services.

For Google Docs, Claude focuses heavily on writing and document editing. In Sheets, it can help with formulas, models and data analysis, while Slides users can use it to create and refine presentations.

The biggest competition will likely come from Gemini, which already offers deep Google Workspace integration. However, Claude’s new presence gives professionals another AI option inside the Google ecosystem.

For paid Claude subscribers who already depend on the AI assistant, this could be one of the most useful Workspace integrations yet.
