Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max in China, bringing the company’s latest flagship hardware together with a feature that could have practical value for everyday smartphone users: a built-in hardware privacy display.

The new Pro models pair Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family with large silicon-carbon batteries, 120Hz AMOLED displays, triple rear cameras led by 200MP sensors and a secondary screen on the back. Xiaomi has also confirmed that the Pro series will receive an international launch later this year.

Here’s what you need to know about the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, including their displays, cameras, performance, battery technology, pricing and privacy features.

Specifications are based on Xiaomi’s launch information and reporting from multiple technology publications.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Powers the New Xiaomi Flagships

One of the biggest changes is inside the phones.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, while the 18 Pro Max steps up to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Xiaomi is positioning the two chips differently, with the standard Elite version focused more on efficiency and the Extreme model targeting maximum performance.

That distinction gives Xiaomi a way to separate its two Pro models without making the Pro Max simply a larger version of the same phone.

Both devices also offer configurations with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, using UFS 4.1 storage according to published specifications.

For demanding users, the combination of the new Snapdragon platform, high RAM capacity and fast storage makes the 18 Pro family clearly positioned as a flagship performance series.

Smart Privacy Display Is One of the Biggest New Features

The most unusual feature on the Xiaomi 18 Pro series isn’t the processor or camera. It’s the Smart Privacy Display.

Instead of relying on a privacy screen protector, Xiaomi has built privacy functionality directly into the display hardware. The technology uses different pixel arrangements to narrow the viewing angle when privacy mode is activated. Xiaomi says brightness at viewing angles beyond roughly 60 degrees can fall dramatically, making it harder for people beside the user to read the screen.

The system can be activated in several ways, including:

  • Quick Settings
  • Voice commands
  • The AI key
  • Specific apps or pages
  • Location-based triggers
  • Front-camera detection of people looking over your shoulder

The software can also apply privacy protection selectively. For example, privacy settings can be associated with particular apps, notifications, floating windows or split-screen content rather than simply obscuring the entire display.

That could make the feature particularly useful in places such as airports, offices, public transport and crowded cafes.

Xiaomi Uses a 120Hz AMOLED Display

The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, while the Pro Max increases that to 6.9 inches. Both support refresh rates of up to 120Hz and peak brightness of up to 4,000 nits.

Xiaomi is also using its latest display technology to balance resolution and power consumption. The company says its RGB pixel arrangement can provide clarity comparable with a 2K-class panel while using power closer to that of a 1.5K display.

That approach matters because flagship displays increasingly have to balance high brightness and sharpness against battery consumption.

The Rear Screen Gets More Useful

The secondary rear display returns from the previous generation, but Xiaomi is expanding what users can do with it.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a roughly 2.7-inch rear OLED display, while the Pro Max uses a roughly 2.9-inch panel. Both can be used for notifications, widgets, media controls and other mini-app experiences.

The rear screen also works as a viewfinder for the rear cameras.

That means users can use the much more capable rear camera system for selfies while seeing the framing on the rear display. Gesture controls and other shortcuts can make this setup more practical for self-portraits.

Xiaomi is also introducing AI-powered functionality that allows users to create customized mini apps and wallpapers for the rear screen.

Two 200MP Cameras Lead the Rear Camera System

Both smartphones feature a triple-camera setup built around two 200MP sensors.

The configuration includes:

  • 200MP main camera
  • 200MP telephoto camera
  • 50MP ultrawide camera

The telephoto camera offers approximately 3.2x optical magnification, while the ultrawide camera provides a field of view of around 102 degrees.

The main camera uses a large sensor, while the 200MP telephoto camera is designed to provide high-resolution zoom and close-focus capabilities.

On paper, the setup gives Xiaomi a broad range of photographic options without relying solely on digital cropping.

The important point, however, is that megapixel counts alone don’t determine camera quality. Image processing, sensor size, optics and Xiaomi’s computational photography will ultimately determine how these cameras perform in real-world conditions.

Massive 7,000mAh and 8,500mAh Batteries

Battery capacity is another major difference between the two phones.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro packs a 7,000mAh battery, while the 18 Pro Max takes that figure to an enormous 8,500mAh. Both support 100W wired charging and 27W wireless charging.

The batteries use silicon-rich technology, allowing Xiaomi to increase capacity without simply making the phones proportionally larger.

The 18 Pro Max’s 8,500mAh capacity is particularly notable for a conventional flagship smartphone. Actual battery life will still depend on display brightness, refresh rate, processor workload, camera use and software optimization, but the capacity gives Xiaomi substantial room for endurance.

Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max Price

The Xiaomi 18 Pro starts at CNY 5,999 in China, while the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max starts at CNY 6,999. That’s roughly $900 and $1,050 respectively based on commonly reported conversions, although those figures should not be treated as international retail prices.

Higher storage configurations push the price considerably higher, with 1TB versions available.

International pricing has not yet been confirmed, and imported or global versions can cost substantially more than the direct Chinese currency conversion.

Will Xiaomi 18 Pro Launch Globally?

Yes, Xiaomi has indicated that the Pro models will launch internationally later this year. That’s significant because the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max remained China-only, making the 18 Pro series the first opportunity for customers in more markets to officially get Xiaomi’s Pro flagship models from this generation.

However, Xiaomi has not yet provided complete international pricing and market availability details.

That means buyers outside China should wait for official regional announcements before comparing the Chinese launch prices directly with competing flagship phones.

What Makes the Xiaomi 18 Pro Series Different?

The Xiaomi 18 Pro family isn’t defined by a single specification. Instead, Xiaomi has combined several unusual ideas into one flagship platform.

The most notable combination is:

A flagship Snapdragon processor + hardware privacy display + rear secondary screen + dual 200MP cameras + very large batteries.

The privacy display is arguably the most distinctive feature because it addresses a problem that traditional smartphone specifications don’t usually consider: who can see your screen while you’re using it.

Meanwhile, the rear display continues Xiaomi’s attempt to make a secondary phone screen useful rather than merely decorative.

Xiaomi 18 Pro vs 18 Pro Max: Which Specifications Actually Matter?

The biggest practical differences are straightforward.

The 18 Pro is the smaller model with a 6.4-inch display, 7,000mAh battery and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.

The 18 Pro Max increases the display to 6.9 inches, raises battery capacity to 8,500mAh and uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The core camera system and privacy display concept remain broadly shared between the two.

That makes the decision largely about size, battery capacity and processor tier rather than a radically different camera or display experience.

Final Takeaway

The Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max represent an unusually feature-heavy flagship launch. Xiaomi isn’t simply increasing processor performance and camera resolution. The company is also trying to solve everyday problems through hardware-level privacy controls and a more capable rear display.

The Smart Privacy Display, in particular, could become one of the defining features of the series if Xiaomi’s implementation works as advertised. The huge batteries and dual 200MP cameras add further weight to the specification sheet, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family provides the performance foundation.

The biggest remaining question for international buyers is pricing and availability. Xiaomi has confirmed an international launch, but regional details will determine how the phones compare with other premium flagships in each market.
