Snap is moving beyond Snapchat with its most ambitious hardware product yet: SPECS, a pair of standalone augmented reality glasses designed to put computing, AI and digital information directly into the user’s field of view.
The glasses are now available to pre-order for $2,195, with a $200 refundable deposit, and are expected to begin shipping in fall 2026 in the US, UK and France. Snap has also announced a partnership with Verizon in the US, giving buyers the option of adding cellular connectivity through a dedicated charging case and a monthly data plan.
The bigger story, though, isn’t simply that Snap has made another pair of smart glasses. SPECS are designed as a standalone AR computer, with their own processors, transparent displays, hand and voice controls, and an operating system built around contextual computing.
What are Snap SPECS?
SPECS are augmented reality glasses that overlay digital content onto the user’s view of the physical world.
Unlike conventional smart glasses that mainly provide audio, notifications or camera features, Snap’s SPECS use transparent waveguide displays to put visual information directly in front of the wearer. Snap says the glasses have a 51-degree field of view and can display up to 16 million colors.
They don’t require an external computing puck or a wired connection to operate. Snap has built the necessary computing hardware directly into the glasses, including dual Snapdragon processors designed to handle tasks such as world understanding and hand tracking.
That makes SPECS closer to a miniature wearable computer than a conventional pair of connected glasses.
Snap SPECS price and pre-order details
The Snap SPECS price is $2,195 in the US.
Snap opened pre-orders with a $200 refundable deposit, while the company’s product page currently lists the glasses as expected to ship starting in fall 2026.
There are two frame sizes:
- 47mm Narrow
- 52mm Wide
Snap also offers prescription-ready options through third-party prescription partners for supported single-vision prescriptions.
The price puts SPECS firmly in the premium hardware category. It also highlights Snap’s strategy: the company isn’t initially positioning these as inexpensive accessories for Snapchat users, but as a new type of computing device.
Verizon brings 5G connectivity to SPECS
One of the most significant developments is Snap’s partnership with Verizon.
The standard SPECS glasses can operate as a standalone AR device, but Verizon is offering a SPECS Connected Case with cellular connectivity. The case uses Verizon’s network to keep the glasses connected when Wi-Fi isn’t available.
The complete connected bundle costs $2,395, according to Verizon. Eligible customers can also use a 36-month financing option.
Verizon’s connected-wearable plans start at:
- $10 per month for Verizon customers
- $20 per month for non-Verizon customers
The cellular charging case also provides up to four additional charges, giving users more flexibility away from a power outlet. Verizon says SPECS itself offers up to four hours of mixed-use battery life.
This is an important distinction because cellular connectivity makes SPECS less dependent on a nearby smartphone or Wi-Fi network.
SPECS hardware and display
The glasses use transparent waveguide technology so digital information can appear over the real world while the wearer continues seeing their surroundings.
Snap lists a 51-degree field of view, 16 million colors and high-resolution visuals. The lenses are also electrochromic, meaning they can automatically transition between clear and tinted states as lighting conditions change.
The glasses weigh approximately:
- 132 grams for the 47mm model
- 136 grams for the 52mm model
That is considerably more than ordinary prescription glasses, but Snap is packing substantially more hardware into the frame.
The glasses also include open-ear stereo speakers and microphones, allowing users to interact with digital content without covering their ears.
Voice and hand controls
SPECS are designed around natural interaction rather than a traditional controller.
Users can communicate with the glasses through voice commands and hand gestures. Snap’s hardware is designed to understand hand movements and translate them into controls for AR experiences.
This is particularly important for augmented reality. Looking at a floating menu is one thing; being able to manipulate that menu naturally is another.
Snap is also promoting shared AR experiences through Connected Lenses, allowing multiple SPECS users to interact with digital content in the same physical environment. Early examples include games such as chess, table tennis and dominoes.
What can Snap SPECS actually do?
Snap is pitching SPECS as an all-purpose wearable computer rather than a single-purpose AR accessory.
The glasses can handle several categories of tasks.
Navigation and translation
SPECS can provide navigation instructions directly in the user’s field of view.
The translation feature can also display real-time subtitles for spoken languages, with Snap supporting 60 languages for the feature.
That could be one of the more practical applications of AR glasses. Instead of repeatedly looking down at a phone while walking or communicating, information can remain visible in the user’s surroundings.
Entertainment
SPECS can also act as a portable entertainment display.
Snap says its browser can stream services such as YouTube and HBO Max onto a virtual screen equivalent to a 115-inch cinema screen viewed from about 10 feet away. Spotify is also supported.
Snap has announced a Harry Potter experience with HBO Max and interactive sports experiences developed with the NBA and WNBA.
Education
The glasses can also overlay educational content onto the physical environment.
Snap has highlighted experiences such as Apollo 11, an interactive recreation of the historic lunar mission, and Starmap, which can identify and display constellations around the user.
These examples show why AR can be more interesting than simply placing a virtual screen in front of someone’s eyes: information can be tied directly to location and physical surroundings.
SPECS Intelligence brings AI into the glasses
Snap’s latest announcement also introduced SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service designed to work across SPECS, iPhone and Mac.
Rather than waiting for users to ask every question, Snap says the system can learn about a user’s goals, priorities, relationships and routines from the apps and tools they choose to connect. It is designed to surface relevant information and actions when they may be useful.
On SPECS, that could mean AI assistance becomes part of the user’s physical environment.
For example, contextual information could appear while navigating, learning about a location or working through a task.
Snap has made an iOS preview available in the US, while access to the fuller Mac experience is currently handled through an invitation-only waitlist.
Privacy remains a major issue
Any wearable camera and microphone naturally raises privacy questions.
Snap says SPECS does not use facial recognition to identify people and does not continuously record or save audio, video or photographs.
When the wearer takes a photo or records video or audio, an external LED on the glasses lights up or flashes to indicate that recording is taking place.
That visible recording indicator is particularly important for a product designed to be worn in public.
Whether people feel comfortable around AR glasses will ultimately depend not only on the technical safeguards but also on how clearly users understand when the device is active.
SPECS vs traditional smart glasses
SPECS occupy a different part of the wearable market from smart glasses that primarily focus on audio and cameras.

The important difference is the display. SPECS are designed to place digital objects and information into the physical environment rather than simply providing audio and camera-based features.
That also explains the higher price and greater hardware complexity.
Is $2,195 too expensive?
The price will be one of the biggest obstacles for mainstream adoption.
At $2,195, SPECS cost considerably more than many premium smartphones, laptops and conventional smart glasses. Adding the Verizon connected case brings the package to $2,395 before any applicable taxes or recurring connectivity costs.
But this is also a fundamentally different category of device.
Snap is effectively asking consumers to consider AR glasses as another computing platform.
The more interesting question isn’t whether SPECS are expensive compared with sunglasses. It’s whether the combination of hands-free computing, spatial displays, AI, navigation, entertainment and productivity provides enough value to justify the additional cost.
That answer will become clearer once consumers can use the glasses outside controlled demonstrations.
When will Snap SPECS ship?
Snap says SPECS are expected to begin shipping in fall 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom and France.
Snap is also opening a physical SPECS First Look experience at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles from October 1, allowing consumers to try the glasses and new AR experiences in person.
That hands-on phase could be particularly important because AR is difficult to evaluate from specifications alone.
The quality of the display, comfort, gesture recognition, battery endurance and usefulness of the AR overlays are all things users need to experience firsthand.
Snap SPECS: The bigger picture
Snap’s SPECS are an ambitious attempt to move AR glasses from the category of experimental hardware into something closer to a genuine computing platform.
The combination of transparent displays, dual processors, hand tracking, voice interaction, AI, navigation and shared AR gives the glasses capabilities that go well beyond traditional smart eyewear.
At the same time, there are obvious questions around price, battery life, comfort and whether people will actually want to wear a computer on their face for hours every day.
Snap isn’t promising that SPECS will immediately replace smartphones. Instead, the company is betting that computing can gradually move from screens we hold to information we see around us.
At $2,195, SPECS are clearly an early-adopter product. But they also represent one of the more serious attempts yet to make standalone augmented reality glasses a consumer computing platform.
The next test is simple: once the glasses start reaching buyers this fall, will the technology feel useful enough to become part of everyday life?
