Apple Watch Series 12 Review: A Smarter Focus on Health

By Tech Crew

The Apple Watch Series 12 is not a radical redesign, but Apple has made meaningful changes beneath the familiar exterior. The latest smartwatch brings a new S11 chip, a redesigned Health Sensing System, more frequent heart-rate and HRV measurements, a new Readiness score, faster charging and a refreshed watchOS 27 experience.

That makes the Apple Watch Series 12 particularly interesting for people upgrading from an older Apple Watch. For recent owners, however, the differences are more incremental.

Apple Watch Series 12: What’s New?

At first glance, the Series 12 looks much like previous generations. Apple offers 42mm and 46mm case sizes, with aluminium, titanium and ceramic options. The aluminium and titanium models measure 9.7mm thick, while the ceramic version measures 9.85mm.

The more significant changes are internal.

Key upgrades include:

  • New S11 dual-core processor
  • Redesigned Health Sensing System
  • More frequent background heart-rate tracking
  • Recovery HRV measurements
  • New Readiness app and score
  • Audio Intelligence features
  • Faster charging
  • watchOS 27 interface improvements
  • New aluminium, titanium and ceramic finishes

WIRED’s review found that the Series 12 feels more intuitive in everyday use, particularly because of the improved health tracking, charging and software experience.

Design and Display

Apple has stayed with the familiar square watch design rather than attempting a major visual overhaul.

The Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Its Always-On Retina display uses wide-angle OLED technology and LTPO3, with brightness reaching up to 2,000 nits. The display can also drop to 1 nit for darker environments.

Aluminium versions use Ceramic Shield 2, while titanium and ceramic models have sapphire front crystal. Apple also brings back ceramic, with Pearl White and Night Blue finishes.

For everyday use, the familiar design remains one of the Apple Watch’s strengths. The relatively compact case, extensive band ecosystem and mature watchOS interface make it suitable for everything from workouts to notifications and sleep tracking.

Health Tracking Gets More Attention

Health monitoring is arguably the biggest story with the Apple Watch Series 12.

Apple has introduced a new Health Sensing System designed to collect health information more frequently. The company says the new optical sensor can perform high-frequency heart-rate tracking every five seconds throughout the day.

The watch also provides more frequent HRV measurements and introduces Recovery HRV information. These measurements feed into the broader health and fitness picture rather than functioning as isolated numbers.

The new Readiness feature is another major addition. It combines information related to sleep, activity and health to provide a score intended to help users decide whether to train or recover.

For people who already use the Apple Watch as a fitness and health tracker, these changes could be more significant than the external design.

Fitness Features

The Apple Watch Series 12 continues Apple’s extensive fitness tracking system.

It supports custom workouts, heart-rate zones, training load, running metrics, cycling information, swimming workouts and multisport activities. It also includes features such as VO2 max, running power, cadence and post-workout heart-rate measurements.

The watch is also rated for water resistance to 50 metres and carries an IP6X dust-resistance rating. Apple lists a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor as part of the hardware.

Safety features include Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Check In and noise monitoring.

Performance and S11 Chip

The Series 12 is powered by Apple’s S11 chip, a 64-bit dual-core processor with a four-core Neural Engine. The watch also includes 64GB of capacity.

The processor is not simply about making apps open faster. Apple is using the new hardware alongside its health sensors and AI-related capabilities.

The Series 12 also supports Apple’s newer Audio Intelligence features, including Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Shazam and Sound Recognition. Some Audio Intelligence capabilities are scheduled to arrive later in 2026 rather than being available immediately.

watchOS 27 and Smarter Interaction

Software is another important part of the Series 12 experience.

The watch ships with watchOS 27, which brings interface changes and new ways to interact with the watch. WIRED highlighted the redesigned app layout, which makes frequently used apps easier to reach without navigating through a crowded grid.

Apple is also expanding gesture controls. The Series 12 supports a single-tap gesture alongside existing double-tap and wrist-flick interactions, giving users more ways to control the watch without touching the display.

One caveat is that some software features are also coming to compatible older Apple Watch models. That means not every watchOS 27 improvement requires buying a Series 12.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life remains one of the areas where the Apple Watch Series 12 does not completely break from tradition.

Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of normal use, or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode.

The bigger improvement is charging speed. Apple says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 12 hours of normal use, while just five minutes can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking. The watch can reach 80 percent charge in around 30 minutes.

That makes faster charging particularly useful for sleep tracking. You can briefly charge the watch before bed without necessarily sacrificing overnight health data.

Still, the 24-hour rating means the Apple Watch Series 12 remains a device that needs regular charging. WIRED also identified battery life as one of the Series 12’s limitations.

Is the Apple Watch Series 12 Worth Upgrading To?

The answer depends heavily on which Apple Watch you currently own.

For someone coming from a considerably older Apple Watch, the Series 12 combines several meaningful improvements in one package: better health sensing, newer processing hardware, faster charging, additional health insights and a refreshed software experience.

The situation is different for recent Apple Watch owners. The overall design remains familiar, battery life is still rated at 24 hours, and several watchOS improvements are available on compatible older models. WIRED similarly found the Series 12 more compelling as a refinement than as a dramatic reinvention.

Privacy is another consideration around the new Audio Intelligence features. Tools such as Siri Recap and Live Rewind involve microphone-based functionality, making Apple’s approach to processing and privacy relevant for users who plan to use them. WIRED specifically flagged privacy concerns around these features.

Final Verdict

The Apple Watch Series 12 focuses on refinement rather than reinvention. Its familiar design is paired with meaningful hardware improvements, particularly around health sensing and charging.

The new Readiness feature, more frequent health measurements and improved fitness data make the Series 12 more useful for people who want their smartwatch to play a larger role in health and recovery tracking. Faster charging also addresses one of the practical frustrations of wearing a smartwatch around the clock.

The biggest limitation remains battery endurance. With a rated 24-hour normal-use battery life, users still need to maintain a regular charging routine.

For older Apple Watch users, the combination of health, performance and charging improvements represents a substantial change. For recent models, the upgrade case is more dependent on whether the new health capabilities and faster charging fit the user’s priorities.
