India Could Be Among First Countries to Roll Out 6G, Says Jio
Jio showcased its proprietary pre-6G technology stack and Giga MIMO Radio at IMC 2026 in New Delhi. The company describes the radio as India’s first of its kind and has also developed a common baseband unit designed to support both 5G and 6G networks.
MIMO stands for Multiple Input Multiple Output. The technology uses multiple antennas to transmit and receive data, helping improve network capacity and efficiency. Jio’s next-generation radio technology is intended to support growing demand for high-speed connectivity and data-intensive applications.
Jio Claims 6G Could Deliver 5x Capacity
According to Jio, its proposed 6G technology could provide up to five times the capacity of current 5G networks and reduce latency by nearly ten times. These are company targets, with actual performance depending on final standards and deployment.
The operator expects improved connectivity to support real-time AI services, holographic video, healthcare, education and other advanced applications. Jio has also highlighted potential benefits for farmers, doctors and students.
India Could See 6G Around 2030
Jio believes India could be among the first countries to introduce commercial 6G services once global standards are finalised around 2030. The company says it has filed more than 8,000 patents across its portfolio, including hundreds related to 6G, and made over 934 contributions to global standards.
However, commercial 6G services are still several years away. For now, Jio’s IMC demonstration highlights its efforts to develop telecom hardware and software in India while preparing for the next generation of wireless connectivity.
