Facebook Introduces ‘Your Algorithm’ to Let Users Customize Feed and Reels
Meta has introduced a new AI-powered feature called Your Algorithm that gives Facebook users more control over the content recommended in their Feed and Reels. The feature allows users to tell Facebook, in their own words, which topics they want to see more or less of, instead of relying entirely on likes, comments and viewing history to influence recommendations.
Announced on October 13, the feature is designed to make Facebook’s recommendation system more personalized and responsive. Meta says recommendations can update in real time after users change their preferences.
What Is Facebook’s Your Algorithm Feature?
Your Algorithm provides a dedicated space where users can add and manage their content interests. For example, someone who enjoys smartphone launches, technology reviews and artificial intelligence news can express those preferences to help Facebook recommend more related content.
Similarly, users can indicate that they want to see fewer posts about particular topics. This gives people a more direct way to influence their recommendations rather than waiting for Facebook to infer their interests from their activity.
The feature is available through the three-dot menu on Facebook posts, where Meta has added easier access to content customisation tools.
How to Customise Facebook Feed and Reels
Facebook is also expanding the feedback options available on individual posts in Feed and Reels.
Users can select Interested or Not interested to tell the platform whether a particular recommendation matches their preferences. Facebook may then ask follow-up questions to understand what the user liked or disliked.
People can explain their preferences in natural language, giving the recommendation system additional context. For example, a user could request more technology news but fewer unrelated entertainment videos.
According to Meta, these inputs help its ranking systems adjust recommendations within the same session, allowing changes to take effect without waiting for a long period of new activity.
How AI Powers the New Recommendation System
Your Algorithm uses large language models (LLMs) to interpret users’ interests, context and intent from written feedback.
Facebook has traditionally relied on multiple signals, including likes, comments, shares and watch history, to estimate which content users may find interesting. With the new approach, users can communicate their preferences directly, while AI helps the ranking system interpret those instructions alongside existing signals.
Meta says this combination can make recommendations more relevant and nuanced. However, the feature does not mean users will have complete control over every post shown in their Feed. Facebook’s ranking systems will continue to determine which content appears based on multiple factors.
Availability and Rollout
Meta is rolling out Your Algorithm alongside the expanded feedback controls. The company has not provided a detailed country-by-country rollout schedule, so availability may vary between accounts.
Users who cannot find the option in the three-dot menu may need to wait until the feature reaches their account.
The update also builds on Meta’s wider efforts to make recommendations more interactive across its platforms. Instagram has introduced similar algorithm customization tools, while Threads offers a related feature called Dear Algo.
With Your Algorithm, Facebook is giving users a more direct way to shape their social media experience. Its effectiveness will depend on how accurately the system interprets feedback and how consistently those preferences influence recommendations over time.
