WhatsApp Is Developing Guest Calls for Users Without an Account
WhatsApp is working on a new guest calling feature that could allow people to join voice and video calls without creating a WhatsApp account or installing the app. The feature is expected to expand the platform’s existing call-link functionality, making it easier to connect with people who use other messaging services.
According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the feature is under development for iOS and is designed to let guests join calls directly through a web browser. It has not yet been made available for public testing, and WhatsApp has not announced an official release date.
How WhatsApp Guest Calls Will Work
With the planned feature, WhatsApp users will be able to create a call link from the Calls tab and choose between a voice or video call. They can then share the link with someone who does not have a WhatsApp account.
Recipients will be able to open the link in their browser and attempt to join the call without downloading the application or signing up. The host will need to approve guests before they can enter, helping prevent unwanted participants from accessing conversations.
The feature could be particularly useful for workplace meetings, customer conversations and family calls where not everyone uses WhatsApp.
End-to-End Encryption and Privacy
Guest calls are expected to retain WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption protections. Reports indicate that the browser session will generate a unique identifier used to establish the encryption key, allowing guests to participate without a registered account.
Host approval will also provide an additional layer of control, especially when call links are forwarded to other people.
Expected Availability
WhatsApp has already introduced browser-based calling, allowing users to make audio and video calls through WhatsApp Web. Guest calling would take this further by removing the account requirement for invited participants.
For now, the feature remains in development. Its final functionality, supported browsers and rollout schedule have yet to be confirmed. If launched, guest calls could make WhatsApp a more accessible option for connecting with people beyond its existing user base.
