OnePlus 16 design and color options officially revealed

The OnePlus 16 is shaping up to be the company’s next major flagship, and OnePlus has now officially revealed several important details ahead of its launch in China. The company has shown the phone’s design, confirmed three color options and listed four RAM and storage configurations.

While the OnePlus 16 retains a familiar design language from the OnePlus 15, the new flagship introduces a distinctive rear-panel lighting system on its special Tomorrow’s Starlight variant. OnePlus has also confirmed a system-wide 165Hz refresh rate, while several other specifications remain based on reports and leaks.

OnePlus 16 Design

At first glance, the OnePlus 16 follows the design direction established by its predecessor. The phone features a flat-looking profile, rounded corners and a square metal camera island positioned on the rear.

The camera module houses a triple-camera setup alongside an LED flash. A customizable AI key is also positioned on the left side of the phone.

Rather than completely redesigning the handset, OnePlus appears to be concentrating on materials, finishes and interactive elements for this generation.

The most distinctive version is Tomorrow’s Starlight. Its rear panel incorporates an interactive lighting effect that can illuminate the OnePlus branding and celestial coordinates. The lighting can react to different activities, including calls, notifications, music, charging and gaming.

OnePlus is also using what it describes as a silk glass process for the finish. The company says this treatment provides a smooth feel while helping reduce fingerprints.

OnePlus 16 Colors

The OnePlus 16 will be offered in three colors:

ColorKey design feature
Tomorrow’s StarlightInteractive rear lighting and starlight-style texture
Dark ForestDark, understated finish
Mars MasterpieceWarmer, more distinctive premium finish

Tomorrow’s Starlight is clearly the visual centerpiece. Along with the lighting system, the finish uses a nano-grating texture designed to create a shifting starlight effect as the phone moves.

For buyers who prefer a more conventional flagship appearance, Dark Forest provides a darker alternative, while Mars Masterpiece offers a more expressive finish.

OnePlus 16 RAM and Storage Options

OnePlus has also revealed the memory configurations for the upcoming phone.

The listed options are:

  • 12GB RAM + 256GB storage
  • 12GB RAM + 512GB storage
  • 16GB RAM + 512GB storage
  • 16GB RAM + 1TB storage

The 16GB + 1TB configuration puts the OnePlus 16 firmly in flagship territory for users who want substantial local storage.

These configurations have been revealed through OnePlus’s Chinese pre-order listings. Pricing and final availability for individual markets have not been fully established yet.

OnePlus 16 Display

One of the most notable specifications officially confirmed so far is the 165Hz refresh rate.

Unlike smartphones where extremely high refresh rates may be restricted to particular games or modes, OnePlus has indicated that the OnePlus 16 supports 165Hz across the system.

That could make scrolling, animations and compatible applications feel particularly fluid. Whether users will notice a major difference compared with 120Hz or 144Hz displays will depend on the application and individual use, but the specification demonstrates OnePlus’s focus on responsiveness.

Reports also point to a flat OLED display, although the final panel specifications should be treated separately from the details OnePlus has officially confirmed.

OnePlus 16 Performance

Performance is expected to be one of the phone’s biggest selling points.

Reports suggest the OnePlus 16 could use Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship Snapdragon platform, with various sources referring to it as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 or a closely related name.

The exact commercial branding and final specifications should be confirmed by Qualcomm and OnePlus before being treated as official.

The timing is significant because Qualcomm’s next flagship Snapdragon platform is expected to be announced around the same period as the OnePlus 16 launch cycle.

If the reported specifications materialize, the OnePlus 16 could be positioned as a high-performance device aimed at gaming, demanding applications and long-term flagship use.

OnePlus 16 Battery and Charging

Battery capacity is another area where the OnePlus 16 could make a substantial jump.

Reports currently point to a 9,000mAh battery, which would be unusually large for a mainstream flagship smartphone.

A battery of this size could provide significant endurance, particularly when combined with modern chip efficiency and OnePlus’s power-management technologies.

The phone has also been linked to 100W wired charging through certification information. However, charging specifications should be considered reported rather than fully confirmed until OnePlus publishes the complete specification sheet.

A large battery combined with fast charging would fit OnePlus’s longstanding focus on performance and endurance.

OnePlus 16 Camera

The OnePlus 16 is also expected to receive a substantial camera upgrade.

Current reports point to a triple-camera system featuring:

  • A 200MP primary camera
  • A 50MP ultrawide camera
  • A 50MP periscope telephoto camera

The reported primary sensor is considerably larger than the sensors commonly found in mid-range smartphones, although megapixel count alone does not determine image quality.

The telephoto camera could also be important for users who regularly shoot distant subjects. Actual image quality, zoom performance, low-light photography and video capabilities will need to be evaluated once production hardware becomes available.

OnePlus 16 Software

The software situation is particularly interesting for the upcoming flagship.

In China, the OnePlus 16 is expected to run ColorOS 17 based on Android 17 rather than the OxygenOS software used on OnePlus phones in several international markets.

The exact software configuration outside China will depend on the markets where the device is ultimately sold.

OnePlus’s international website continues to promote OxygenOS, so it would be premature to assume that the Chinese software experience will be identical to any international version.

OnePlus 16 Launch Date and Availability

OnePlus has begun taking reservations for the OnePlus 16 in China, but a final public launch date was not yet confirmed in the latest information available on September 21, 2026.

Reports have pointed toward an October launch window, although readers should wait for OnePlus’s official announcement before treating a specific date as confirmed.

International availability is also an open question. The company has not yet provided a complete global launch schedule for the OnePlus 16.

For buyers outside China, this is particularly important because specifications, software and even market availability can differ between Chinese and international models.

OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15: What’s Changing?

The OnePlus 16 does not appear to be a radical redesign. Instead, OnePlus is refining the existing flagship formula.

The most visible changes include the new color treatments, Tomorrow’s Starlight interactive lighting, updated hardware and the higher system-wide refresh rate.

The rumored 9,000mAh battery and upgraded camera hardware could represent larger practical changes than the exterior design.

In other words, the OnePlus 16 looks more like an evolution of the OnePlus 15 than a complete departure from it.

What We Still Don’t Know

Despite the recent official reveals, several important questions remain unanswered.

OnePlus has not yet provided a complete global specification sheet, official international pricing or a confirmed worldwide launch schedule. Details surrounding the camera system, battery, processor and charging have also appeared through reports and certifications rather than a complete official announcement.

The final retail specifications will therefore matter more than the current rumor cycle.

OnePlus 16: What to Expect

The OnePlus 16 is developing into a flagship centered around three themes: high performance, high-end hardware and distinctive design.

The 165Hz system-wide refresh rate is officially confirmed, while the Tomorrow’s Starlight edition gives the phone a visual identity that separates it from conventional glass-backed smartphones.

The reported 9,000mAh battery, 200MP main camera and next-generation Snapdragon chipset could make the hardware even more ambitious, but those details should be treated as reported until OnePlus officially confirms them.

For now, the OnePlus 16 is an intriguing evolution of the OnePlus flagship formula. The biggest remaining pieces are the final specifications, launch date, pricing and availability outside China.
